Chapter 10

“There it is!”

Ellie smiled at the happy note of excitement in Mel’s voice behind her. They rode under the arched gate to the Flying D in tight formation. Quill and Paint were in front in human form, followed by each woman in single file flanked by a man on either side of her, and Snake and Stone rode behind them, leading the pack horses. Connor slept in Ellie’s lap, and Tommy rode with Sara. The other wolves ran alongside on four paws. This might be Mel’s home, but none of the men were taking chances with the women’s safety. Besides, as Snake pointed out, the Dirk men would be glad to see how well protected their sister would be with him for her husband.

Just like the last time she’d ridden into the yard here, dogs rushed out, barking threateningly. This time, though, their barks turned to whines, and they cringed away from the wolves, clearly knowing who was more dominant. Ellie saw black rifle barrels poking out from windows. As Quill motioned for them to stop in front of the house, Mel shouted, “It’s okay, Marc! Call Mord and Mike off. I’m home, and these are friends.”

“You okay?”

Mel snorted. “No, I’ve been kidnapped, and these people are holding me for ransom.”

Connor woke with a jerk, mouth open to wail. Ellie rubbed his back to quiet his alarm. After a moment the front door opened and Mel’s older brother stepped out, rifle slung into the crook of his arm. He almost looked as though he wanted to smile.

“Well, get down then, and come here.”

Mel slid off her horse and ran to throw herself into her brother’s arms. They embraced for a long moment before they broke apart, and the other two brothers came from the bunkhouse. Ellie noticed that at least one of Mel’s brothers was focused on Quill and the other men at all times. Mel spoke to her brothers in a low voice before swinging around to motion to Snake.

“Marc, this is Snake. He’s the one who…” Mel’s voice trailed off.

“He won you in the Bride Fight? He’s your new husband?”

“Yes. No. Not exactly.”

Snake dismounted and approached. He stopped next to Mel. Ellie noticed how his body leaned ever so slightly toward her. “Mel was won by a trio of brothers named Fosse,” he said. “They weren’t treating her right, so I killed ’em. Mel is mine now.”

Mel didn’t argue with his statement, though her brow wrinkled.

“Fosse.” Mel’s older brother’s voice was flat.

“Yeah, so I probably can’t stay here long. We can talk about that later,” Mel said with a careless shrug, but Ellie saw her hand slip down to stroke a thumb over her pistol butt.

Marc shook Snake’s hand, searching his face with narrowed eyes before sizing up the rest of him, including the long black braids. He jerked a chin toward the furred wolves sitting tamely nearby. “Strange pets you keep.”

Ellie saw Mel’s chest rise with a sharp gasp, but Snake kept steady. “Not pets. My cousins.
